Family attractions in the UK

The Drayton Manor Resort in Tamworth, England, is one of the most well-known and popular family attractions in the UK. It combines a sprawling amusement park, a zoo, and a hotel, providing a comprehensive experience for visitors of all ages. The resort covers a large area that was once part of the historic Peel family estate, and has evolved since its opening in 1950 into a versatile destination for adventure-seekers and animal lovers.

Amusement park with zoo and hotel

The amusement park is the centerpiece of the resort and is known for its variety of rides that offer both thrills and family-friendly fun. One of the highlights is "Thomas Land," an area based on the famous children's book series "Thomas the Tank Engine." Here, children can experience their favorite characters like Thomas, Percy, and James up close and enjoy rides on themed attractions, including a train ride through the fictional island of Sodor. This area is particularly popular with younger visitors and sets Drayton Manor apart from other amusement parks as the only place in Europe to offer such a Thomas-themed experience.

Thomas Land for children

In addition to "Thomas Land," there are also more exciting attractions for older visitors and adrenaline junkies. One of the most famous roller coasters is "Shockwave," which made history as one of the first stand-up roller coasters in Europe. Its unique design, where riders stand during the ride, provides an intense experience. Another modern addition is "Gold Rush," a family roller coaster that provides extra thrills with a lift-and-launch system. The park also offers a variety of other rides, including water rides like "Splash Canyon" and spectacular spinning rides like "Maelstrom" that whirl visitors through the air. Themed areas like "Vikings" and "Adventure Cove" complement the offerings with immersive experiences inspired by Nordic legends or maritime adventures.

Another highlight of the Drayton Manor Resort is the zoo, which houses over 100 species of animals from around the world. Visitors can marvel at exotic animals such as Sumatran tigers, red pandas, Eurasian lynx, as well as various species of monkeys and gibbons. The zoo spans a generous area and is designed to present the animals in as naturalistic environments as possible. This makes it not only an attraction for animal lovers, but also a place where families can learn more about conservation. The zoo is an integral part of the resort and adds an educational component to the amusement park.

Seasonal events in the amusement park

The Drayton Manor Resort also has a rich history. Originally, the grounds were part of a mansion built in the 19th century for Sir Robert Peel, the founder of modern policing. However, the estate fell into disrepair over time, and after World War II, the land was acquired by the Bryan family, who founded the amusement park. In 2020, the resort was acquired by the Looping Group, a company that also operates other leisure facilities in the UK. Despite the change in ownership, the Bryan family remains involved in the management, preserving the park's family tradition.

The resort also offers a hotel, perfect for multi-day visits. It features modern rooms, including specially designed family rooms with "Thomas and Friends" themes that are particularly popular with children. The hotel is surrounded by lakes and parkland, offering a relaxed atmosphere after an exciting day in the park. On-site restaurants serve a selection of dishes, from classic British cuisine to international options, and there are even special events like children's entertainment or themed evenings to complete the stay.

Noteworthy are the seasonal events that enliven Drayton Manor throughout the year. During the Halloween season, the park transforms into a spooky experience with special attractions, night rides, and fireworks that appeal to both children and adults. In winter, there are festive events that turn the park into a magical setting, often with a focus on "Thomas Land." These events make the resort a year-round destination that goes beyond the typical amusement park season.

Despite its many advantages, Drayton Manor has also faced challenges. A tragic accident in 2017, where a child was involved in an accident on the "Splash Canyon" water ride, led to a temporary closure of the park and a lengthy investigation. Such events have kept safety measures in focus, and the park has since been vigilant in providing visitors with a safe experience.

Their online mistakes, still advertising annual gold pass at £75 2 days after it allegedly expired. They refused to honour the price and quoted terms and conditions, despite their error Typical arrogant response for companies negligence.

A great place for the kids with lots of fun things to do. Did look a bit tired in places and broke down (especially the submarine experience in Thomas Land, not suitable for adults or older children as kept grounding out). Still a fab visit though

I love Drayton manor, it’s my home park and I think the rides are really fun. I know it’s meant to be a family park but I’d improve it by adding another thrill ride like the Wave is, a rollercoaster with inversions

half term, and if you were under years old it was passable, most of the proper rides were shut, most of the food outlet were shut, half of the Zoo area was under something or another, l took a foster child who was so excited about going to a Zoo(animal crazy) and had never been to any type of theme park was sooo excited, and it was an absolute tear breaker..Really Drayton Manor, you should be so ashamed...

Our expectations were low, but we left feeling there were fundamental problems that needed to be resolved. The park in general looks a bit tired. There are some good rides for young children, but certain things took the shine off the day. Number one was the state of the toilet facilities. They are horrible. Our 5 and 3 year olds refused to use them, and I can't say I blame them, but we then spent the afternoon expecting them to wet themselves. The toilets stank and were filthy, it's hard to breathe in them. For a family day out, it's just nowhere near good enough.

We got the season passes this year for days out and so it's been great! Been a couple of times and a lot of the park is closed for winter but still found plenty to do. Different events have been on each time so it feels like something is going on and it's different each visit. Would recommend the pass to families looking for days out.

We brought our entrance tickets via Wowcher, excellent deal. Parking was great, we confirmed the vehicle registration in advance. We managed to get parking close by the entrance. Thomas Land and the Zoo were included within the tickets purchased. Lots of rides for toddlers which was great. No shelter at any rides from the rain, I would recommend taking a small umbrella and a poncho, just in case! The rides were great, not much of a queue which was fab as it was raining most of the day.

Overall we had a lovely day but it was very crowded and queue lines were very long for the little ones to wait in. It would probably help if a few of the other little rides were opened for the winter events

My autistic, teenage son has the Gold Pass and uses his Access Card to get an access wristband, meaning he can enter the ride via the exit. As he frequently visits Thomas Land, he definitely has his got his money worth from having the Gold Pass! The staff do not question him as to why an older teenager wants to go on Thomas Land rides. Instead, they interact with him, make him feel welcome and really brighten his day! He calls Thomas Land his 'second home'. It's a place where he knows he is welcome and can just be himself. The special events, such as Christmas, big blue birthday bash, Halloween trail, etc are all made accessible to him. Well done to Drayton Manor for being inclusive and welcoming older teenagers/adults with special needs. We wish all places were like this! He says that he is definitely going to renew his Gold Pass!
